What is a Frugal Deal?
There are thousands of 'sales' and deals on the Internet, not to mention the national retail flyers and emails we get. This can be a positive thing. But there are times a positive thing can cross the line into a negative. Sales and deals can be just another way to separate you from your cash. And, another avenue to feed a shopping addiction.
A deal is a deal only if it serves a concrete need in your life. A 50% off sale is good IF you need an item. A coupon is good IF you need an item. (or can get it for free) A free gift card with purchase is good IF you need the purchased item.
The need for something is a personal decision. For instance, Christmas is coming soon and you have dedicated gift cards to a chain restaurant for family and friends. With the purchase of 25.00 gift cards there is an offer of a free 5.00 GC. Since the GCs are the gift you want to send, this is a deal for you.
Buying 25.00 cards is not a deal if your allotted budget was priced at 15.00 for each family. However, if you bought 25.00 in GCs and received the free 5.00 card and you have 3 10.00 gifts to give, then you saved 20.00 in your budget. A quick call to the local store asking the manager if you can purchase the cards in smaller increments and still receive the free card will save you time, gas, and aggravation.
3 families with a budget of 15.00 each (45.00)
buy 25.00 of GCs in 10.00 and 5.00 increments
get one 5.00 free GC
budgeted for 3 people 45.00
cost for 3 families 25.00
savings 20.00
You now have a choice to put the savings aside to pay on a bill or roll it back into the Christmas budget.
This thinking process takes a while to cultivate, and there will be mistakes, but it will become a way of life - if it is your goal. And the money saved will begin to show up more and more. Maybe that's what it's meant when people say 'It takes money to make money'.

I haven't ordered from here yet because I need to research all of the fine print. If anyone has some free time and can check this out, let us know what you come up with.

Happy Birthday
Thirty eight years ago today, our lives were instantly altered. For the good. Daughter number one greeted the world with quite the wail, that- to this day- creates a smile in my heart.
It took us nine months to agree to a name. When we finally agreed, we knew the choice was the right one. Her name means 'strong woman'.
Strong Woman and I talk on the phone every day. She still keeps her mom close to her heart and includes me in the day to day life of her family. Since we live 900 miles apart I have to use my imagination when she talks of my grandson's "monkey moves". I can just see that free little spirit expressing himself while mom's hair is slowly turning grey. Or hearing our oldest grandson express his love of math by saying, I LOVE math, and grandma wondering who's child he is because none of us even like math.
Strong Woman is a mom, wife, educator (science), writer, daughter, sister, a good friend, and a kind person. She is always willing to learn new things, whether the quest is welcomed or not.
She was freely welcomed into the hearts of Daddy and I when she was born, and is still welcome to reside in our hearts, no matter where we are.
Happy Birthday sweetie. We love you.

Start Your Christmas Gift List Now
There's a lot of hype this time of the year about sales and good prices. All kinds of gift ideas are spread across the Internet and in the store flyers. This can be a good thing because it offers gift ideas and reveals current prices. On the other side of the coin all of the information put out can be confusing. All of the information is intended to grab as much cash as possible from your wallet.
How do you get around all the confusion? In a word, organization. Most organization begins with a list. Make a list of people you want to buy gifts for. Leave some space between names in case you change your mind. List gifts you want to get for each person. As simple as this may seem, the list is your foundation for shopping. Set a budget price for each person. Then look for those items and research and compare prices offered. Start the research at the manufacturer's site for suggested retail price. Search the Internet for the item and sales and promo codes. When you are satisfied, buy! Either online or in a store.
If this is your first attempt and you fail in a couple areas, try not to get caught up in your mistakes. Use the mistakes as a learning tool and move forward. Next time you'll do better. Frugality can be a learned lifestyle for some. For others it seems to be genetic. You'll never know which is the case for you, if you don't try.

Shopping Trip
I went to Price Chopper and Rite Aid today. For me it's a down week as there weren't too many deals out there this week. I did some stocking up for holiday cooking.
PC
I bought $20.00 worth of items in the 'buy 20.00 get 5.00 off your next shopping trip' deal (if I didn't buy an extra cake mix, I would not have qualified for the 5.00 Catalina)
2 Pillsbury cake mix 2.00
6 bread mix 9.94
2 Eagle sweet milk 5.00
2 Smucker jams 4.00
I had 3 1.00 coupons
Total 17.96 (saved 14.52, items were on sale)
I got the 5.00 off next shopping trip Catalina
I went back and got:
large bag dog food 9.99 (sale 1.00 off)
produce .93
I had:
1.50 coupon
5.00 Catalina
Tax was .80
Total was 5.22 (saved 7.50)
Total for both trips was 19.74 which is a few cents less than the 20.00 special sales items. You could say I got the dog food and produce for free.
RA
3 cards 9.79 (birthdays)
2 Russell Stover candy 17.98 (gifts)
2 Cherries 2.00
Total: 29.77 ( plus tax, 1.57)
Russell Stover BOGO -8.99
4.00 RA coupon
1.00 watch video coupon
1.00 RA coupon
.10 discount on cards (wellness card)
14.68 Total out of pocket (plus tax)
Today I got over 60.00 (before sales and coupons) worth in items for 34.42. That's 57% of shelf prices. Imagine if I did this every week for a year. If my grocery and health and beauty budget were just 2500.00 a year my savings would add up to 1175.00 a year. This would show up as 22.60 a week or 90.40 a month, which doesn't look like much. But looking over the year that's big savings.
I'm stocked up so the items I got do not reflect the every day purchases a shopper makes. I am using these numbers as an example. Any shopper can do this with items we use every day. There has to be a starting point. This can just be 1 coupon this week and 3 next week. The ball just keeps rolling until your savings become more than your expenditures.
I do not use coupons on items I don't use. If an item ends up being free, I do buy it and donate it.

Mommy's Vacation Time
If you need some time to yourself to rejuvenate, there's no need to spend money. Here's a few things that will help you move forward, at home - or close to home.
1) Talk to your significant other. Let them know you'd like to change how you rejuvenate. You'd like to find ways not to spend money and still get some peace and quiet.
2) Designate a bath time each week. No one is to disturb you during the 20 -30 minutes the bathroom door is locked. You will need another adult in the house to watch the kids and keep them from disturbing you. Light the candles, grab a book and a small glass of wine. You'll feel like a new woman.
3) If you feel you need to leave the house, go to the library for 30 minutes. Read magazines or look for a good book.
4) Window shop. Just window shop. Don't go far from home, just anywhere that is a short drive and interests you.
5) Prayer time. When the kids are napping, sit and rest. Say a prayer or two of thanksgiving to God. Thank Him for the things we take for granted such as the sun and soil and good health. And - those kids or co worker that just worked your last nerve.
6) Turn off all electronics and clean out a closet or shelf. It's very calming to the spirit when you do mundane tasks so your mind can wander.
7) Take a walk around the yard, looking down. You'll see all sorts of wonders there.
8) If you are at work go to your vehicle for lunch or a portion of it. Sit with your eyes closed or check out some trees or cloud formations.
9) Tell your significant other how much you appreciate them. Do this out of no where and you will have the person in a very good mood. This comes back to make your day better and more relaxing.
A rest can be for five minutes or 30 minutes. The amount of time doesn't matter. What matters is that you can move forward with a renewed spirit.

Friday's Frugal Journey to Financial Freedom, part 1
It's a simple thing to tell someone to become frugal. It's even easier to give out frugal tips. But how does a person begin the journey? With so much information out there, which direction do you take to begin the journey?
When it occurred to me a starting point can be confusing, I asked myself how can I help others start without feelings of being overwhelmed creeping in on them. I decided to begin at the beginning. Just one frugal task is all it takes to begin the rewarding lifestyle. It takes a commitment to begin. Sometimes things won't work out the way they are suppose to. The important thing is you make the commitment. Every thing that follows will be an experiment.
Each week I'll post a frugal task. Try it out and see if it works for your family.
The first step is to get your finances on paper. Unfortunately, this is a have to. Write down every cent that comes into the home in one area and every cent that goes out in another area. You can do this in a computer program or with pen and paper. This may take a while because you'll need to gather bills and receipts for a week or a month. This depends on how you want to approach your budget. Note how much is spent on consumables such as coffees, lunches, groceries, health and beauty aids, etc. This is important because these are areas you can spend less on. Clothing and gas for the vehicle are other areas to look at in detail. Any area that is not a fixed cost can be reigned in. Expenditures to include, but not limited to:
Mortgage, rent
Real estate and school taxes (if separate from mortgage payment)
Phone (s)
Heat and electric
Cable
Water
Trash
Home and vehicle insurance
Clothing
Gas and mileage, maintenance
Car payments (s)
Credit card debt and other unsecured loans (furniture, appliances, etc)
Gifts
Groceries
Medicine
Health plan payments
Discretionary spending ( lunch at work, coffee on the way to work, etc)
Anything else that's pertinent to your family.
This gives you a picture of where your money is going. This is the foundation for the rest of your journey. It's the most difficult step. Creating this list may be shocking when you see the results. After you recover, you'll see you are willing to proceed or you won't. My hope is you will move forward toward the next step of financial independence.
A nice side effect of the frugal lifestyle is a person sure does sleep well at night!

Giving This Season
No matter what the stats say, we all know the country is in a recession. Food prices have climbed in the past few weeks and gas has gone up. Our electric bill will rise 4% this month. It's difficult stretching every penny to provide for our families.
It seems this would be a good time to let donations go, if not for just now. You may have to, this would be a personal decision. No one would blame you for waiting a while before you think of the needs outside of your family.
I made a personal decision to continue to donate. Even one can of veggies to the church food pantry is helpful. Someone would benefit from that food. This can be seen with the post office food drive that's held each year. If each household donated one food item, the local pantry would be overflowing. Our local schools hold events with admission of a food item. No one in my area goes without food because of the events held in my area.
Beyond that there are some things worthy of thought.
1) The dollar store has hats and mittens. Many schools have a giving tree that can be filled with these items. The ones I found at Real Deals are stylish and warm.
2) Free items from drug store shopping can be donated to a shelter or a school.
3) The ToysRUs game deal (8 games for 1.25 each post) can be used for donating or gift giving and donating.
4) Free or low cost food items are great for giving. No one knows how much you paid for an item.
5) Dollar store flash cards or crayons or a small stocking stuffer will put a smile on a child's heart.
The gift doesn't need to be grand. It only needs to come from your heart.
If you have any other suggestions please leave a comment. We love suggestions.

It's Time to Think About Filling Christmas Stockings
Most families that celebrate Christmas include stockings filled with goodies in their traditional gift cache. This year our kid's stockings will be filled for the grandchildren rather than the adult child.
Since I've been wondering what to put into the stockings I am reminded of what we filled them with when our kids were young. There were no dollar stores then so we had to be prudent, but with the advent of dollar stores we can go wild.
Here are some suggestions to get your thoughts flying:
Zero - 1 year old. Parent's pick. They really aren't aware of what a tradition is.
A huge orange
crayons
coloring / activity book
matchbox cars
Barbie clothes
candy that they can never have during the year (those huge suckers come to mind)
dollar gift certificates for french fries at a fast food place (the 21st century treat)
a huge wrapped sugar cookie with a theme cutout (cars, dolls, etc)
'designer' socks
'get out of jail free' coupon(s), they don't have to do a chore when they hand this in
coupon for 2 stories read to them before bed
recipe for their favorite snack and an invitation to help prepare it
coupon for staying up 1/2 hour longer on a Friday night ( I wouldn't give too many of these. A child will usually get up at their normal time on Saturday feeling the effects on Sunday, and sleeping later then)
All of these suggestions can be had for 1.00 or free.
If you have any ideas or traditions to pass on to the readers, I encourage you to add them in the comment section. I am always willing to learn.

Frugal Hint
If you are looking for a bed skirt, look in your linen closet before you head to the store or online. There may be a flat sheet in there that can be draped over the box springs as a bed skirt. Looking for a twin size, but only see a queen sheet? Pleat the sheet over the box spring to add detail to the bed. Frugal and pretty!

Life is a Balancing Act
It's good to be frugal. It's almost required if we are concerned about the environment. Recycling and conserving resources are two ways that we can be frugal and protect the environment at the same time.
Another benefit from the frugal lifestyle is we have more control over where our money is being spent. If the lifestyle is embraced to meet a goal, such as paying down debt, then there is more focus needed to meet this goal. When debt is paid off, what remains is your money and the choice of how to use it. The goals change. Perhaps more is put into an emergency fund or saved for a vacation. The freedom to do what you want with the money is priceless.
Some frugalistas become so entrenched in saving money, they forget about the comfort of family members. Unless the family lets a frugalista know she is going over the line, she never knows where the line is.
There was a point that I got so excited about a lowered grocery bill that I forgot about the people I was buying the groceries for. The solution was DH told me about it and I came up with a solution that worked for both of us. It was simple enough to offer him a snack a week of his choice without a coupon or sale when he said he was unhappy. This brought balance into my efforts.
People are always more important than the money, but balance has to be found at that end too. Endless chips and cookies each week are budget busters. But one choice added to the bill can't hurt and makes for contented family members. Life has to be balanced with living.
What really helped my situation was the first time DH saw the savings from the grocery budget that paid cash for Christmas. He was hooked and a great supporter from then on.
So indeed move forward to pay off debt. Stay on a close budget and deny yourself any extras while paying off debt. When the debt is paid off, reevaluate your goals and strategy. Enjoy the results of your hard work and use your money to enjoy life and each other. Make it work for you.

Winter Fruits and Veggies
Lots of moms choose to feed their families only fresh fruits and veggies. It's a good thing, but in recent years this thinking has gone to the extreme. By this I mean moms go to the store and purchase out of season produce, handing over some big bucks for it. Fresh produce can take a big bite out of a grocery budget in the winter months. Besides the taste of out of season produce is less than desirable and has a diminished vitamin content.
Winter has it's own, however limited, produce and is often on sale as a loss leader item. (low priced items to get shoppers in the store)
These fruits and veggies are reasonably priced during winter AND provide essential nutrients and vitamins:
celery
onions
potatoes
carrots
cranberries (November)
bananas
oranges
grapefruit
kiwis
raisins, prunes
apples
Frozen berries are affordable as well. You can also consider getting a serving of fruit or veggies by drinking juice (real, no sugar added) as well.
Mother nature takes care of us all year long. The choices may be more limited than in the height of the growing season, but vitamins are bountiful.

What to Stockpile (Food Emergency Fund)
I like to think of stocking food as a type of emergency fund. After all if your family is facing an unforseen emergency, having the stock at home means you don't have to spend money on food for a while.
Stocked food should provide the body with vitamins and minerals that keep a body healthy. Forty boxes of cereal will provide hunger relief for a short time, but not many vitamins to keep you going in the long term.
The basic vitamins and minerals can be found in:
Canned tuna, chicken, and other meats
Fruits and vegetables
Cereals and other grain products such as breads and granola bars
Salt, which is essential to keep the body healthy

If you don't eat canned meats on a regular basis, it's OK to eat them for a short period of time to get you and your family through an emergency situation.

How to Start a Stockpile
The buzz word this year in the frugal community is 'stockpile'. Stockpile can be defined as a surplus of items within easy reach. Perhaps you know someone who has an area, or areas, in their home dedicated to storing items for future use. When you look at the items the first thing that can hit you is confusion. So many items and how did they get there is the first thing that pops into your mind. I researched this before we began the food 'emergency fund', and found nothing. So I asked questions of anyone I thought would have an answer. I found out it was painless to begin. Here's what I came away with and it's worked well for us.
Begin small. If there is a sale and coupons on an item and you can get an item cheap or free, go for it. It doesn't matter what the item is as long as it has a long shelf life. I started with canned tuna.
Each week set aside an amount you can spend on stock items from your grocery budget. Again, start small. Some weeks there will be more than others and some weeks there will be less. The important thing is to add to the stock often. Before you know it shelves will be full.
When you get the items home write the expiration date on the front of the item. This saves time and energy looking for the small printed date on the top or bottom of the can later on.
Think about the four food groups that are important to a healthy diet then store them together. All items that provide protein should be stored together for quick viewing so you can see where and when you need to buy more. Or all veggies and fruits. All grains such as cereal and power bars can be stored together.
Add some comfort foods to the stock. Normally when a stock is used as an emergency fund there is a stressful situation a family is facing. Comfort foods added to the stock lessens the stress. I used our stock for well over a month after my husband passed on because it was difficult to think of going out.
Rotate items and use them in everyday cooking to prevent waste. Saving money on sale items won't be very frugal if at some point items have to go in the trash. Once in a while we have a week or two that all we eat is what is in the freezer or cupboards. This is one way to use up food before it goes bad.
Stocking sale items is rewarding and a comfort. Saving hundreds of dollars at the register is priceless.

Frugal Lifestyle, It's a Choice
I am often asked what frugal means. My reply is longer than some people are looking for. To me being frugal has lots of benefits. Originally it may be used to get out of debt. Once out of debt you may not feel it is the lifestyle you want to live. It's a choice.
True frugalistas live frugally as a lifestyle. They know that if they watch the pennies, the dollars add up. It's a slow process, but once it reaches it's peak, you wonder where all the money you have comes from. It's a choice.
Being frugal is good for the environment. Our grandparents knew this at a time that there was no such word as recycle. It's a choice.
Being frugal is also considered being a good steward of your resources. Doing the most with what you have. Not looking at what you don't have, but being creative with what is yours. It's a choice.
All of the small ways resources can be save add up to form a good way of life. Then you have cash to spend on what is important to you.
Most everyone has heard of the Latte Factor by now. It's the simplest way to describe how to make your money work for you. It works like this:
You have 100.00 for the month to spend anyway you want. (discretionary cash) You can buy 20 lattes or save the 100.00 for 2 months and buy the wii you've been wanting, but didn't think you could afford.
When this principle is used for everything you spend, the outcome is a good life with no debt and a good night's rest every night.
One small thing I do is I buy only 2 rolls of foil a year. I use an old cookie sheet to cover things while cooking in the oven. A roll of foil is now at 7.00 a roll. If I used it for everything I did in the oven, my expense would be at least doubled, most like quadrupled. So with just one saving tactic I save 14.00 to 28.00 a year. This is my money I can use to enhance my life.
Some other things I do:
1. Cut dryer sheets in half and only buy them on sale and with a coupon
2. Use sales and coupons together to buy t paper and tissues
3. Do not use paper towel. I bought cheap wash cloths and divided them so some are used only on dishes and the others are for cleaning I do have a roll of paper towels on hand in case the power goes out. It's more sanitary to use them than have dirty cloths
4. Use vinegar, baking soda and bleach to clean the house
5. Make my own room sprays with herbs grown in my garden
6. Use organic matter from the kitchen to amend my garden soil
7. Reuse envelopes that mail comes in to make my shopping list and hold coupons.
8. Use coupons and rewards programs at chosen stores
9. Use glass or plastic containers with lids to store food in the refrigerator or cupboard to save on plastic wrap.
At this point in my frugal journey the list is endless. (I've been doing this for years) I didn't practice every saving at once. I got used to one or two things at a time, then moved on to the next one that sounded as if it may work for me. Some things didn't. Like hanging clothes. I don't like doing this with the exception of sheets and blankets. So it was my choice not to hang clothes. I do dry shirts for a short time in the dryer then put them on hangers.
Frugal is about choices. It's about what works for you and your family. It's also about a good and simple lifestyle.

Sites To Use That Save Cash
There are 2 sites I use to save cash or rack up points when I shop online.
I signed up with Swagbucks (http://www.swagbucks.com/) browser to earn points that I cash in for gift cards. So far this year I have earned enough points to earn 30.00 in Amazon cash. Not an overwhelming amount, but free money.
When I shop I use Ebates (http://www.ebates.com/). There is a 5.00 credit for new customers and a percentage off of any purchase at hundreds of retailers. The discount is different for each retailer.
Here's how it works:
Go to swagbucks. Type in ebates in the bar and click. Go to ebates and shop.
Ebates sends a rebate check every quarter. The schedule is posted on the site.
Both of these sites are respected and I have never had a reason to question them. I do not get spam from them.

Rite Aid, Video Values
The video program at RA gives you a chance to get additional coupons for your RA trip. The program can be accessed by going to the RA site and clicking on the AdPerk tab. The new site sometimes has revolving ads in the upper right hand block. The program is sometimes in this block. So you can wait until it shows and click on it.
Once you are signed up, you can watch short videos. Most of them are 30 seconds or less. Once the video is done there is a code you jot in and a point is given to you. The rewards are good for the time invested. Fifteen minutes at 6.00 is 24.00 an hour.
Watching 20 points worth of videos provides you with a 4.00 off 20.00 purchase. You also get a coupon for the product that is in a video. For the past couple of months there have been RA videos than earn you a 1.00 off any non prescription item. So you go into the store with 6.00 off a 20.00 order, right up front.
Any of these coupons can be stacked with a manufacturer's coupon. Also Up rewards are given off a future order with an advertised item.
It looks something like this:
20.00 order
-6.00 in RA video coupons
- any manufacturer's coupons
+ Up rewards
You can watch 20 videos more than once to earn the 4.00 coupon..

Putting the Garden to Bed
If you think you are interested at trying your hand at a small (or large) vegetable garden in the spring, it's not too early to think about preparing the soil. Grab some of those leaves that are laying all over your lawn and pile them high on the area you want your garden. It doesn't matter if the soil is tilled or not. The leaves provide lots of nutrients as they decompose during the winter months. If you decide not to have a garden in the spring, no harm done. You'll have really green grass in that area in the spring.

A Frugal Meal
I picked up a chicken from Price Chopper this week that cost .79 cents a pound. I am planning on stuffing it with bread ends I have saved in the freezer and local onions bought at the farmer's market for 1.00 for 10. I'm going to 'bake' it in the crock pot. This is the first time I've done this. I'll let you know how it turns out.
The chicken will provide 4 meals for us (2 people). For a family of 4 you may get leftovers for sandwiches.
Dinner Menu (2 people)
Roasted chicken with stuffing and gravy 1.92 + .12
Green beans (frozen, from the farmer's market) .17
Mashed potatoes (from the farmer's market) .22
Pickles ( canned from the garden) close to zero in cost
Milk (varies) .50
Total cost for 2 people 2.98
The cost is this low because of preplanning and having a garden.

A Thanksgiving Meal
Every family has favorite dishes they prepare for Thanksgiving. Most of us enjoy a yummy turkey, prepared with a family 'secret'.
Our family is no different. There are staples, such as a green bean casserole, that just have to be served. Our grown children have taken the favorites into their own homes and have added some more from their spouse's favorites list.
This is our menu. Many memories are attached to these dishes.
Turkey
Sweet potato casserole
Green bean casserole
Watergate salad (I found out I am the only one who likes this)
Pickled eggs
Cheese and crackers
Pepperoni ( I don't know why)
Black bread and dip
Apple pie
Pumpkin pie
What are your favorite dishes? Ones that bring back fond childhood memories. I know my new SIL to be will be making macaroni and cheese this year and my daughter has discovered bread pudding as a new favorite.
Yum. I can't wait.

Christmas is Love in a Stocking
Christmas is my favorite holiday. It's a time when even the most hardened of hearts swells with good will. I love, love, love Christmas!
When we started our family we decided it was important that the children understood what Christmas stood for. It is, after all, a celebration of a birth. The birth of Jesus. It may not have always been known by our kids that Daddy had anything to do with this, but both of us felt it was important to let the kids know that Jesus was an important part of our family life.
Having four children, one who was sick for quite a few years, money was tight. But the rest of what family offers wasn't. I remember the year our youngest daughter was born (in December) my husband handed me $40.00 for gifts for the other three kids, 2 days before Christmas.
Money in hand, and a prayer in my heart, I went to a local discount store. I had so much fun. When I went into the store the toys on my list popped out at me. They were all on sale at a deep discount. I left the store with bags of gifts and 2.00 in my pocket.
I spent that 2.00 on candy and oranges for the Christmas stockings.
Back then we had coupons and rebates, but nothing like what is available to us today. I probably could do better with some time to plan and watching the ads, if my shopping trip were today.
Each year I learn a little bit more about the true meaning of Christmas. Today I see it is more about the family being together concept than the gifts. Back then the gifts made it fun because everyone was young. Today the gifts have become a small part of our celebration, even though there are grandchildren. The gift I am thankful for is our family, with Jesus as our leader. And the food has taken second place in the fun.
I'm thankful for the family that is our legacy. I'm thankful for the food on our table, but I will miss my husband's presence - although I know he will be here in spirit. I am also thankful for that.

Price Chopper, CNY and Northern Pennsylvania
In our area (CNY) Price Chopper has a few good deals. The best deal is there are 3 triple store coupons, up to and including 1.00, in Sunday's flyer. (10/31)
Progresso soups are 4/5.00 (sale)
Triple coupon - 3.00
Final cost = 4/2.00 or .50 each.
As far as I could tell all of the regular soups were in this deal, including wedding soup.
I used the other 2 1.00 coupons I had on Celestal teas.
2 1.00 coupons (6.00 tripled)
2 teas 6.58
Final cost = .58
Total: 2.58
Pork chops are 1.00/lb
and whole chickens are .79/lb
There is also a coupon for cereal 4/8.00. Adding a 1.00 triple coupon to this would lower the cost to 4/5.00 or 1.25 each
Also PC has special online coupons every Thursday at www.pricechopper.com for additional savings

Rite Aid (RA) 10/31-11/6
I have 2.00 in up rewards that expire on the 6th. I'm using these today to purchase:
Chex mix - 2/3.00 with 1.00 up reward
final cost: 1.00 for both or .50 each
If the reward were counted these items would be considered free. I will count them on the next purchase.
If I had a coupon for Chex, they would be free as most manufacturer's coupons are 1.00 off 2.
Buying the Chex Mix is the beginning of my Christmas entertaining stockpile.

Rite Aid (RA)
Rite Aid has recently added the Wellness program for shoppers. With a Wellness card, which only takes seconds to sign up for at any register, you can receive up rewards when purchasing advertised items.
The reward is printed out on the receipt and can be used for your next purchase. The rewards can be used with a manufacturer's coupon and a RA coupon. This is referred to as 'stacking' coupons. All of the above can be used on one item. It goes something like this:
Purchase an item for 5.00.
Use a 1.00 manufacturer's coupon, 3.00 in Up rewards (from a previous purchase(s), and 1.00 RA coupon. The item is free. If you use this system on an item that also gives Up rewards, the ball keeps rolling on to your next purchase. The RA site has a pdf file that explains the corporate rules. If you have a BOGO (buy one get one free) coupon and RA has a BOGO sale, you can use the coupon and both items will end up being free. However an item appears to be taxed at the original price.
Your first transaction will cost what is advertised, minus any coupons. After that you can use the Up rewards.
You can't do better than that for lowering your budget.
An example of a transaction I did last week is:
I bought 3 Huggies diapers on sale for 8.99. (original 12.49)
I received 3 2.00 Up rewards for future purchases
I used:
11.00 in RA coupons
5.00 in Up rewards
6.00 manufacturer's coupons
I paid 5.00 out of pocket (OOP) and received the 6.00 in rewards. The 5.00 came from rebates I received from the RA rebate program.
Final cost was a money maker of 1.00
I took the 6.00 in rewards and, in 2 transactions, purchased 6 99 cent greeting cards which came with 2 free bags of candy and 2.00 of rewards.
I paid nothing for 3 diapers, six cards, 2 bags of candy. I saved 38.00. Not to mention the sale price was 3.50 less for each pack of diapers. (9.50 total)
You can sign up for the rebate program at the Rite Aid site, www.riteaid.com.

Sadness In Our Home
This is a difficult post, but I feel I should explain my absence. My dear husband of 40 years has recently passed. I have been in mourning for a few months.
I feel a pull to continue on with the blog as I have added new ideas coming your way. I'd like to expand the posts to include deals at drug stores and CNY food chains. I'll also be offering advice for young families that will include bringing in your budget.
I am going to log all items I 'purchase' that will end up at a cost of 1.00 or less - often free. By showing you how this is done, your creative juices will begin to flow and you will find your own way to pile up low cost items for your family.
So let's get started, moving forward, and saving money.
