Winter Fruits and Veggies

Lots of moms choose to feed their families only fresh fruits and veggies. It's a good thing, but in recent years this thinking has gone to the extreme. By this I mean moms go to the store and purchase out of season produce, handing over some big bucks for it. Fresh produce can take a big bite out of a grocery budget in the winter months. Besides the taste of out of season produce is less than desirable and has a diminished vitamin content.

Winter has it's own, however limited, produce and is often on sale as a loss leader item. (low priced items to get shoppers in the store)

These fruits and veggies are reasonably priced during winter AND provide essential nutrients and vitamins:

celery
onions
potatoes
carrots
cranberries (November)
bananas
oranges
grapefruit
kiwis
raisins, prunes
apples

Frozen berries are affordable as well. You can also consider getting a serving of fruit or veggies by drinking juice (real, no sugar added) as well.

Mother nature takes care of us all year long. The choices may be more limited than in the height of the growing season, but vitamins are bountiful.
