I live in hurricane land so not only do I think about it, the news stations talk about planning and the papers put out printed booklets each year on the best way to be prepared. I guess the attitude in this area is, ' An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'. This makes perfect sense to me. So Angie wants to give you ideas on how to be prepared for an emergency situation. I'm prepared for two weeks of downed power, just in case it takes longer than expected to restore power. Most people in this area are also prepared to leave their homes if mandated.

Keep in mind, I'm no prepping expert, nor do I feel the world is ending. I just prepare for an emergency hurricane. When I lived in the North I prepared for winter storms. (That was used quite often,)

The BASIC list of items you may need to be semi comfortable during an emergency situation consist of things that address basic human needs. Instead of keeping things in different spots in the house, I have a bin that can be picked up and moved IF we are told to leave the area.

An easy way to organize a bin is to write down what you would do and need if power was out.

FOOD and WATER
How can you warm up food? Do you have food that can be eaten cold? Do you have one gallon of water per person per day?

WARMTH
blankets and a small kerosene heater. (or) use fragrance free candles in a closed room. Leave a window opened just a bit so the fumes don't disable you.
Clean clothes, shoes and undies

LIGHT
Flashlights (My daughter got me five small ones at WM for 1.00 apiece)
Candles
Batteries for flashlight

MEDICAL
Any medicines taken daily
Bandages
Tape
Antibiotic cream
Scissors
Pain reliever

CASH
Small denominations in case ATMs are down and you can get to a store after the disaster or during recovery period.

These will provide basic needs in an emergency.
If you want to go beyond basic needs it would be good to have string, scissors or small knife, and a tarp. A tarp can be used to cover holes during a storm to prevent water damage to your home. It also has a number of other uses such as shelter in an extreme case.

This list only provides the basic human needs to survive a short lived event. I have watch videos where people go all out. I do a lot of eye rolling during them. I used them to glean basic information. And, of course, for entertainment purposes!Angie's frugal Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501238383146880477noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809691927256994512.post-17744864212814262412016-09-14T14:21:00.003-07:002016-09-14T14:21:16.436-07:00Christmas Bargain Shopping and a Shared MealOn September 15 2016 the new discount card I received in the mail from Kohl's becomes valid. This time I received a 30% off coupon. I've been waiting for the 30% coupon because there are a couple of Christmas/birthday gifts I want to purchase. Not only can I use the 30% coupon, they are also offering cash back. For every 50.00 spent, I will receive 10.00 in cash back vouchers to be spent during the next cycle.

Here's the scenario:

1.Cost of gifts: $460.00
2.Purchasing online through www.ebates.com cash back promotion of .03% Minus $9.66
3. 30% coupon, minus $138.00
4. Kohl's cash, 60.00
5. 2 you rewards, $15.00

460.00
- 138.00 = 322.00 (coupon)
-9.66 = 312.34 (ebates reward, rounded down)
- 60.00 = 252.00 (Kohl's cash)
- 15.00 = 237.00 ( 2 you rewards)
This comes out to be a savings of 223.00

I like this! First thing in the morning I will take advantage of the free shipping online and order the items.

Monday I woke up with so much energy that I did a marathon session in the kitchen. The beef stew and home made bread made a great meal that I shared with friends and family. I enjoyed the visit and had fun setting the table with a fall theme. The meal was topped off with a garden salad and jello. The kids ate mac and cheese with some salad and the jello. The adults topped off the dinner with a store bought coffee crumb cake while the kids chomped down a few candy corns.
Not on purpose, but things are popping in and out in a rather random manner. Not things that happened, but the things and people who have shaped who I am. Things I consider gifts from God. At this very moment I am so thankful for the good things that my heart is bursting and tears of joy are flowing. Thank you, Father, for always taking care of me and protecting me.

This week has been a quiet one, but I did get out a couple of times. Dinner with family on Wednesday evening at Smokey Bones to celebrate little miss's fourth birthday, then a party on Saturday with friends and family.

One of the families that came to the party are foster parents. They currently are caring for a beautiful one year old girl who warmed my heart when she put her arms out for me to hold her. I love babies and puppies. It's nice they like me, too.

A local grocery was offering a 10.00 off 50.00 purchase coupon. Since I seldom spend over 28.00 a week on groceries my first thought was the offer was not for me. Immediately afterwards my mind went in a different direction. I could purchase long term items such as coffee and sugar to bring up the total to meet the requirements. Not only did this work well, but the items I needed were all on sale. Here's the breakdown.

The total came to 71.00 and change.
The coupon brought the total down to 61.00 and change.
I then asked what day the military discount applied and was told it was every day on store brand items. (organic items included)
The final total was 58.33.

I have enough food for well over three weeks, including organic fed sausage that was on a manager's special for 1.49 for eight patties. I bought the two packs that were in the meat case.

Another item I want to rave about is a new to my area yogurt called NOOSA. It's made in Colorado with a mother from Australia. What an amazing product. The container holds close to twice as much as our normal ones do so it will last for two to three servings. It's so good, though, I may 'pig out' on it and eat it all at once.

I normally eat peach yogurt, but it was

I also stopped in to a local thrift store and found a sweater from The Loft which looks as if it has never been washed or worn. 4.99 later I have something to keep the chill of winter at bay.

This was the week I went through the fall decorations and brought a few down. In one bin I have fall, Thanksgiving and Halloween decorations. I only brought out the fall decorations and paired them with a new wreath for the front door and a new pillow that has dogs dressed in costumes that was placed on a living room chair. I bought that pillow more for the little ones than myself. The four year old loved it while she described all of the animals and outfits they wore.
A tropical storm is a hurricane with lower wind gusts. (I think) I did prepare for it as I removed the wreath on the front door and brought up the outside chairs and plants on the porch and in the yard.

Yesterday I went to the bank and stopped in Michael's. I seldom go to that store, but there was something I've been wanting there for a couple of weeks. When I remember something, I know I really want it. Just a small package of magnetic page markers for my planner. I'm not one for 'decorating' my planner, but this small item makes it an easy task to find the current week's activities. There's not a lot of activities, but I won't keep all the information in my brain without it written down.

I also found a small rectangular box with chicken wire on the front and the back. I saw my kitchen utensils in it for a winter look. I also picked up a small gift to pop into a Christmas stocking. I spent a little over 19.00 of my discretionary cash at Michael's and decided that was enough.

When I purchased my vehicle two years ago one of the perks was free oil changes and free annual state inspections. No one told me that the oil change would cost if the percentage of good oil was above 20%. Since I have always been a 'better safe than sorry' kind of girl, it stressed me out to wait that long. It finally hit the target point so I spent Wednesday afternoon at the dealership drinking ice cold bottled water and watching HGTV.

The blackberry bushes finally gave up enough fruit for a nice batch of jelly. (seven pints) This batch is the best I've ever made. Organic fruit, but I didn't have enough organic sugar for an entire batch so I used regular cane sugar as there was plenty in the pantry. Can I say yum yum?

If the items are bough on sale it's can be considered a cheap recipe. Because the olives are the major taste, a cheaper cream cheese can be used without deterring from the finished product. This recipe makes two.

16 ounces cream cheese
1 can black olives, chopped into small pieces
1 jar green olives, chopped into small pieces
garlic powder to taste
hot sauce to taste

Mix all ingredients together. Form into a ball and wrap in cellophane. Refrigerate until used. Serve with crackers and fruit on the side.Angie's frugal Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501238383146880477noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809691927256994512.post-63400902121063685652016-08-21T07:08:00.002-07:002016-08-21T07:08:31.656-07:00In The Kitchen With Angie (And Other Things)I broke a rule and went out on Saturday. The farm market was smaller than I remember it being last year. Let me qualify that statement. We have two locations. One is close to my house and the other location is between my house and my daughter's house. Because I was going to my daughter's home, I stopped at the location that was between our homes.

I did find a farmer who was smart enough to offer bruised tomatoes at 4/ 1.00. I scooped up four big ones to make a couple of sandwiches and use the rest for home made pasta sauce. Those four tomatoes will provide two sandwiches and at least two pasta dishes. I guess the cost for each would be .25 cents. Not bad and makes me happy to use what others would think to be inferior foods. The perfect tomatoes were selling for 1.00 each.
Also into my bag went five peaches that were priced at 3.00. Sixty cents a peach is OK. They were local (state) peaches so I scooped them up.

From the farm market I went to pick up my daughter for a trek to Wal Mart where she had to pick up glasses for her sons. I returned two items and picked up a box of 12 individual packs of cookies for 4.00. Each pack was .30 so it was a good deal as far as cookies I didn't need. The original thought was to have them on hand for the grandchildren, but they may not last that long.

After dropping my daughter and her sons off I headed home. Noticing the Intercostal Waterways bridge was up I detoured to the Dollar Tree instead of waiting in traffic while the boats passed through. I was looking for one more white container for the pantry and was surprised to see only one white one on the shelves. Snatched up and placed in the cart, I went on my way. I also picked up two other items - a spool of plaid ribbon to make a bow and sour patch kids for the grandchildren.

Heading home took a few minutes with a total of 11.00 spent. The items I returned totaled close to 28.00.

The rest of the afternoon was spent eating a tomato sandwich, removing two of the cucumber plants from the garden, watching BBC documentaries and a quick nap. The evening ended with a daily call from a friend with lots of laughter and a good night call from my daughter.

Remember the flour I canned? I wanted to test it out in a recipe so I made ginger cookies with it. The cookies came out delicious, but I will not can flour again. It became lumpy and difficult to break up. I'll use what I have so it won't waste, but not repeat the process. I did have fun experimenting though.

Another experiment was making up a small batch of pancake batter that didn't need anything added but water to make the pancakes. I did add mild and eggs for a good protein source This experiment was successful.

I did make one other trip to the book store on Thursday. My daughter and I bought our date books and we each found a cookbook that interested us. The rest of Thursday was spent with S and her family as I stayed over night with her pup as my sleeping buddy.
How was your week spent? Did you enjoy at least one thing this week? Let us know in the comment section.
Glorious FoodI planned to go to the farm market this morning, but I can't seem to muster up the enthusiasm to go out into the 107 degree heat index weather. The humidity is great for my plants, but not humans.

I was in a store with my daughter S two days ago and felt ill. The store had air conditioning, but I feel they were trying to save money because it was pretty warm in there. I thought I ate something that didn't agree with me at the time. After I was in the air conditioned vehicle I began to feel good again. Since then I have only gone out briefly in the evenings to water the plants and briefly in the early morning to pick anything that needed to be harvested.

The cucumber plants love the heat. I have quite a few to process that have been picked the last two days.

I guess I have a project to finish this weekend.

Since it's so hot meals have been light. Oatmeal with raisins and milk for breakfast or a bowl of cheerios with bananas and milk. Lunches and dinners are mostly made up of veggies and fruit with peanut butter toast for protein. Lots of water to stay hydrated and staying in the cool house will hopefully keep me healthy.

A while back I got 15 pounds of free flour. The bags first went into the freezer then into the refrigerator to be stored until they were used. I haven't been baking because it's summer and I am not in the mood. So.... I canned the flour in the oven! Fifteen pounds of flour fit into 4 two quart jars along with 2 one quart jars. Since it was a new found skill I had lots of fun doing it. One minor detail. The jars were suppose to be in the oven on low heat for 2 hours, but a nap happened and they were in there 3 hours. This weekend I plan to open one of the smaller jars to use in a ginger cookie recipe to check out if I can still use the flour.
You buy bone in chicken -on sale. You cook chicken. You save the bones, either in the freezer or refrigerator, depending on when you plan to make the stock.

Grab a pan or the crock pot, place the bones and cover them with water. Cook on low heat for an hour or two. That's it. Mine simmered for two hours and I watched that the water didn't evaporate. The trick is low heat.

I strained the broth from the bones by using a sieve with cheese cloth. I have done it a number of times without the cheese cloth and it works fine. Place the bowl of broth in the refrigerator to get cold. By doing this the fat rises to the top and solidifies. Using a spoon scrape the fat off and discard.

You may find lots of small pieces of chicken fell off the bones. This can be used in a soup or stew.

With one whole chicken three to four meals can be had. Roasted in the oven or crock pot, sandwiches, broth for mushroom soup, (or soup of choice), and chicken soup.

The broth is virtually free. I might add it's also nutritional. Hands on time is about seven minutes in total.

The uses for the broth can be endless when imagination is used. I use it to cook the rice a roonie mix, mushroom soup, and as a base for a roast in the crock pot. I'd be interested in hearing what my readers could add to this small list. I'm always up to learning new things.
I've traded in Nikki's channel for Mrs. Erica. The former channel is not only getting commercialized, the style used is becoming rather sterile. But, Mrs. Erica's style and the style I'm most comfortable with are very close. There's nothing like a bit of wood to offer the feeling of warmth to a home.

I'm attaching Mrs. Erica's video posted this morning so you can see the simple project she did that even I can accomplish with minimal know how. I had the items needed at home and went directly to the office to do the project. Retrieving the items, cleaning up, and doing the project took 10 minutes.
I went to a social gathering and had three appointments. While at a party my son in law asked me if I got some sun. I certainly didn't mean to get some sun, but just being in the car and yard has tanned me. It only takes 10 minutes for me to tan and it goes darker from there.

Accomplishments have been varied this past couple of weeks. Since we've had torrential rains for three days, the garden has watered itself. The rains in combination to the heat have produced enough cucumbers to make three more jars of pickles with enough in the refrigerator to make two more jars. Today I have three jars to put in the fridge making the total to date seven jars.

I did take time out to watch a few yoo toob videos. My favorite was called 'The Super Rich and Us'. It explained what happened from 2008 to the present to change the economic environment. It seems those who had cash funds could afford to buy up companies and such therefore becoming very wealthy. I guess this practice brings a new meaning to the term 'saving for a rainy day'!

I also watched a video about food in Italy. I got so hungry watching it, I stopped the video and went to make some fresh pasta. Paired with salt and pepper and cheese, I had a good meal with fresh tomatoes from the farmer's market.

I spent time upstairs dusting and cleaning the bathroom. Then I de-cluttered the office space putting aside papers that need to be shredded and filing others. Some small items that no longer worked were thrown in the trash and the small craft stash was re located to a bigger covered bin that I found in a guest room. The junk drawer was also de-cluttered and cleaned out. How does such a small space get so filled with stuff I don't need or want? I also cleaned out the cleaning supply caddy and organized it. I have multiples of the wet and dry floor cloths that were purchased at the dollar store during spring. They add two more cloths to the wet cloth package for their spring season 'sale'.

It's time to check out my gift closet and get a handle on Christmas gifts. So I organized the gift closet and took some notes. My son in law has been asking for socks since I met him as a Christmas gift. I finally found a good sale on socks and picked him up a pack of ten.

I went to Wal Mart because I needed a new phone and a fire box for important papers. While there I also got a large hook to hang a new clock I bought a couple of weeks ago on sale for 60% off. I though I bought it for the dining area, but I found a different place I like better for it. It's a big one. As a matter of fact, it's huge.
years without one.

The car was vacuumed and the inside cleaned after our trip to New York. I also paid a couple bills and balanced the checkbook. The bedroom and laundry room were dusted as well as the doors in the house and the floors in the bathrooms and laundry room were washed.

I'm sad to say Willie had to go back to his shelter. He was too strong for me and nearly toppled me on my face when he was excited to go outside. He also liked freedom and accidently got out of the house and took off. I couldn't go after him, but he did come back 'home'. On the ride back to the shelter he cuddled into my chest, but when he got there he was excited to be back. I think the shelter was home to him because he had been there so long. He did return clean and fed. I know they fed him, but he needed a bath and brushing very badly. He got both in the few days he was with me.

What have you been up to? I'd be happy to hear about your accomplishments.
That was a red flag to me because the norm is no more than 160. When I checked to see what country the hits were coming from I saw Russia was the number one country. Even over the USA. Trouble! Lots of hackers from that country. So I changed my password and checked on the numbers often. I'm down to my normal numbers now.

I'd like to introduce you to Willie. He's a beagle - hound mix and is about six years old. We have the same energy level so I'm hoping our relationship blooms. He slept in the laundry room last night because he needs a bath and lots of brushing. The brushing has been done twice since I brought him home with me from a rescue yesterday afternoon and the bath will happen this morning. He will need to loose a few pounds though. He's a bit over weight.

He held his bladder better than I did last night and was so excited to go out this morning that he actually did lots of moving around. He now sleeps with little snores escaping now and again.

This week has been moving along fast. I can remember what I did somewhat. I know I de cluttered the kitchen cupboards, finding 11 items I don't use. Cleaned the refrigerator, also. I also went to the Farm Market to pick up some local peaches and tomatoes. They are gold. The sweet taste of a local tomato is heavenly. And, the peaches have juice that drip down the arm.

I have enough pickles to make two more jars with more coming. The heat has been in the 100s so I shaded my plants with the market umbrella which they seem to love. Many more cucumber flowers have appeared and the bees are working extra hard to pollinate them.

The floors are cleaned with only the bathrooms to be cleaned from floor to ceiling. I'll clean those after I buy dog food for Willie this morning.

The refrigerator pickles are ready this morning so I tested them. They came out yummy. Success is so rewarding.

I have been watching videos on yoo toob about food pantries in the USA and England. What I came away with is that all pantries are different. A few try to focus in on healthy foods, but most are interested in filling bellies. Some can be visited only once a month and give only three days of food per person. Others try to provide a month's worth of food per person. All fall short of the need to nourish well and keep bellies full for the day. Food pantries are on my heart and if I do donate to an organization, it is a food pantry. Most of my tithing goes to individuals who are unaware of where the gift comes from.

That's about all I can remember since I forgot to write things down this week. I wish all my readers a content and peaceful life. Stay safe.
I saw and interacted with all of my family. My daughter took me to grab real Italian foods at the bread bakery and sweets bakery. We also went to a local hot spot on Lake Ontario which is fondly referred to as 'The Loop'. On the way home we stopped at a Lindt outlet and I found some Italian chocolates.

The end of the trip I had to rest for six days, but it was worth it. Once rested I accomplished a few things at home.

The garden produced enough pickles for me to make four jars of refrigerator pickles as well as a quart of blackberries which are in the freezer. (One more quart and I can make jelly.)

The traveling clothes got washed and put away as soon as I got home.

Two cupboards were cleaned out and better organized.

The pantry was re organized, as well.

I made a tomato salad which was devoured with a piece of the Italian bread for lunch yesterday.

I broke down and bought a can of stainless steel cleaner for the refrigerator because nothing seemed to polish it up that I tried. The doors now look lovely.

Since I spend 90% of my time at home, I wanted to make small changes to the environment. I have a couple planned, but began by purchasing a small lamp for the living room at Ross. The lamp that was replaced will go into the guest room for more lighting. I'll be looking for a couple of pictures for the dining room and living room to bring in change in the future.

Carolyn and I also went to Office Max. Pencil sharpeners were one cent each with a limit of three. I bought three. I also bought a few girly things for the office that I still needed. File folders come to mind as well as a pouch for pens and pencils.

The soap dispenser in the powder room was empty so I made more soap for there with castile soap, essential oil, and olive oil.

I do have to put away my luggage today as well as balance the checkbook and pay two utility bills. The floors also need to be cleaned because I haven't cleaned them since I came home on Sunday. With these things done, I should be caught up on my work.

1 large tomato (or more if you'd like)
1/2 medium onion
Salt, pepper to taste
Very large pinch of oregano
Vinegar (I use red wine)
Oil
Slice tomato and place on a flat dish. (I use a dinner plate) Slices can be as thick or thin as you like. Thinly slice onion and spread slices among the tomato. Top with salt, pepper, oregano, oil and vinegar. When combining oil and vinegar a good proportion to follow is half as much vinegar as oil. Let sit on the counter for an hour, then turn slices upside down. Another hour on the counter and you're ready to feast.
Feeds four.
I remember that card in full detail because it had a prayer on it written by Helen Steiner Rice. I memorized the prayer and have said it every morning since. It goes like this:

Good morning, Lord
You are ushering in another day
Untouched and freshly new.
And here I come to ask you. Lord, if
You'd renew me, too.
Forgive the many errors that I made yesterday,
And take my hand and hold it tight,
For I can't walk alone.
Amen

This little prayer served me as a quick reminder of my need to depend on Him as small children called out my name early in the morning from a crib. Or a disagreement rose up from two toddlers well before the sun could cast a shadow on the gardens.

Today this prayer has a renewed meaning for me that spans society and the globe. I can picture the feelings of confusion, instability, and fear dissipating throughout the civilized world if this prayer were said each morning by every person, whether they believed in it's words or not. What harm would it do? There would be no ill effects from the practice, but there would be so many blessings from these few spoken words.

I'm not a very political person and quite frankly don't understand politics that well. What I do see is the social battles we are experiencing are not battles between men, but rather battles between powers and principalities, unseen to us. The atmosphere of confusion is being used to provoke people to carry out actions that they normally wouldn't commit.

My request this morning is that my dear readers think about this post. Reflect on it and see if this is something you'd like to participate in. I'll make a promise. Every little prayer reaches heaven. We can make a difference.

But, before I blog about the trip I want to put up this recipe that has been requested by a yoo toober I faithfully watch. She is a young mom with two beautiful little ones who decided (with her husband) that they wanted to be debt free and serve their family healthy foods. She's looking for a rice a 'roonie' mix that she can make herself without all of the additives. I know I printed this before, but I can't find it, so I'm putting it under the 'cheap recipe' category. If you want to take a look at her channel it's 'The Kneady Homemaker' on yoo toob./

Rice Mix
3 cups uncooked rice
OR
2 cups rice and 1 cup broken (into small pieces) spaghetti (I use this method)
1/4 cup dried parsley
5-6 tablespoons beef or chicken bouillon ( I use chicken with 5 T)
2 teaspoons onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix well and store in an air tight container.
A lovely lady who shares my interest in good food. Her garden is to die for - it's beautiful and full of fruits and veggies.

She recently sent me a picture of jams she made that made my heart leap with joy. I/m so thankful that all the fruits of the earth are being utilized in her home. I get excited whenever I see families grabbing the good food train. Let me put a disclaimer here. There are a few items that aren't the best for me that I like such as licorice and chocolate milk. So I'm not preaching here. I'm only writing what's in my heart.

Which brings me to a video I watched this morning that made me a bit sad. The woman is filled with energy and has a lovely well cared for home. There's a Fourth of July party planned so she videoed the items she bought to 'make' food as her contribution. Displayed on the table were all prepackaged items, The cookies were oven ready. The salad dressing came in a bottle with ingredients that can't be pronounced, and the cheese was pre=grated with 'natural' cellulous (wood shavings) in it. I was crying inside for the choices on display. Not judgmental or angry or holier than thou, just sad.

This blog has a steady readership of between 500 and 700 reads a week. You all know I'm not interested in big numbers, only that I can share the knowledge I've accumulated over the six plus decades I've walked the earth. I feel confident in assuming that my readers want to gather foundational knowledge to live a better and more frugal life. If you'll indulge me a moment I would plead with you to think more carefully about what fuel you put in your body on a regular basis. Where does it come from and how was it grown. What ingredients are in the packaged foods you put on the table. (Manufacturers in this country are getting the hint and are removing chemical additives in some of our packaged foods.) Please help make my heart leap with joy!

Then have a piece of chocolate on me.
In this case the antibiotic treatment was ten times worse than the infection. I have emails to catch up on as well as a million things (figuratively!) I had planned for the blog. This post will be a mash up of things I've wanted to post.

I'd like to begin with asking if anyone is keeping up with the situation in Venezuela? My heart is heavy with the suffering currently going on in that country. The breakdown in the food chain appears to be the end result of socialism. I'm no expert, thought, so if you have information to contribute to this statement, please feel free to offer it in the comment section. Politics is not my forte, to say the least. I have two lady friends that answer all my questions when it comes to me unable to see things clearly in this arena. Then I think the input over without emotion. I'm afraid emotion is clouding any judgment to be made in this area. I hate to see anyone without food. It was not intended for us to be without sustenance.

Things accomplished before I fell ill:

The vehicle was registered for two years.
Cleaned out the toys in the loft
Vacuumed and cleaned the loft and the office
Did a minor cleaning of the pantry
Cleaned the master bathtub and shower using my 'swif' type mop. Beats getting in that monster tub and cleaning it.
Picked a number of beans and ate them all!
Made a stuffed artichoke and enjoyed it to no end
Went to the grocery that carries my favorite water and bought three cases. They also had lemons on sale for 99 cents so they jumped into my cart right next to the Italian olives and bananas.

Also accomplished was a small dollar store haul. They now have coupons on the shelves that can only be used at the Dollar Tree stores. I took advantage of the new large cans of Campbell's pork and beans with the 1.00 off two. This turned out to be buy one get one free (BOGO) with an expiration date of well into 2017. Also in the cart was national brand instant coffee, wet floor cleaning pads, and national brand dried cranberries, tissue,

The ibotta * account is up to 56.25 with the addition of butter, mayonnaise, a green pepper, bread, and cheese.

I also bought a pool towel to use in my daughter's new pool. Pool Party!!!! yea!

I came up with an idea for a post. Let me know what you think. If you are interested in learning the steps in canning with a water bath, I can post a step by step blog for you. Which brings me to the purchase of the new Ball canning book, " The All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving'. I purchased it to learn about alternative ways of preserving foods such as fermenting, curing and smoking. The only disappointing information I found was the list of thirteen items they say is needed for water bath canning. The items are nice to have but not necessary for the novice.

An exciting (to me) thing that happened was I was able to visit a friend's chickens and see the beautiful blue and green eggs they provided. A bonus for me was I went home with six of those eggs. What a nice surprise.

I have two last things to talk about. I went to the mailboxes that are located at the front of our small condo community to grab the mail. What a gift to smell the beautiful scent of the jasmine growing nearby. That scent represented all that the South is.

Another thankful moment was on Sunday when I hung clothes in the yard. I felt a sense of pride to see that even though my yard is tiny it was being utilized in a number of ways. Basil given to me from my daughter's garden was drying in the hot sun, the wash balls were being revitalized in the sunshine, the plants were growing strong and tall and the clothes were drying in the fresh air. I was strangely satisfied with the scene.
The first thing you need to know about how I cook (not bake) is I don't use a recipe. I 'throw' things together and I either like it and do it again, or don't like it. Next, my recipe is for two servings that I will eat two different days. So I will give out the recipe, but you may need to amend it to your tastes.

Mushroom Soup

2 cups beef broth *(Chicken can be used, but the flavor will not be as intense.)
1/2 large stalk celery (diced)
1/4 medium onion (diced)
8 oz. sliced mushrooms
2 T olive oil
1 T butter
1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
salt and pepper to taste
parsley to taste
1/4-1/2 teaspoon paprika (Optional)
2 T red wine IF desired
2 T flour
2 T butter

On medium heat sauté onion and celery in the oil and butter until translucent. (Butter will burn if the heat is too high.) Remove onions and celery from pan and sauté mushrooms until well done. About five minutes. Remove the mushrooms and return the onions and celery to the pan. Add the 2 T butter and melt. Add 2 T flour and mix well. Cook flour for at least a minute so it doesn't taste raw. Slowly add the broth stirring while adding. Add spices. I use a whisk to incorporate the flour rue and broth. Let come to a boil and reduce heat. (The broth will thicken when it comes to a boil.)

Let veggies (on) simmer in the broth for about twenty minutes or until the veggies are thoroughly cooked. Wizz with stick blender or use a food processor. Return to pan. Add mushrooms and warm up then add milk or cream and wine. Stir while simmering about a minute.

Once you get the hang of the recipe it only takes about 15 minutes to make from chopping the veggies to adding the milk.

I use it as a meal, then the second serving I'll sometimes use in a recipe. The second portion gets frozen.

* Broth can be home made, boxed, or made with bullion.

Cost for me is under 2.00 as I use on sale mushrooms and butter as well as milk or left over cream
Of course this is my perception, not reality. Since school for the grands is officially over at 11 AM E this morning we have begun making plans for summer fun.

So far there will be a trip to the North to visit my children and grandchildren for a while , a new pool being installed, and a trip to the book store at the end of this month. I'm sure it won't end there.

As for this past week I've been busy around the house and with my 3 year old granddaughter. Her brother had a medical appointment so we decided to have a girlie fashion show at Dillard's. She walked away with a few outfits for summer. Not many because she announced she was over the fashion show thing. Then we had lunch after which she announced she wanted to go to my house. On the way to the car she saw a shop with items that interested her. We had to stop in to look at the goodies meant to tempt little girls. I explained to her that we could look, but the prices were too high to purchase anything. She wasn't happy about that, but took the information like a trooper. I did find a sparkly nail polish on sale and didn't mind paying 2.00 for it. But, not the 6.99 they were asking for the other polishes.

She again wanted to go home. BUT, another shop grabbed her interest. We looked with the same rule applied. No high cost purchases. Her announcement came in a few minutes that she wanted to go home.

Before we left the mall we had to have a cookie from the vendor on the first floor. Hers was covered in colorful sprinkles, mine a plain old chip cookie.

One last stop before we arrived home. Ice cream! Oh yes, ice cream. This stop was a surprise to her because - the truth be known - it was I who was craving custard.

That evening we all went out for dinner. When I told my daughter I was exhausted she asked me why I didn't stay home. Simply because I can sleep any time, but being with those I love is a priority.

I have to say I slept like a log with no interruptions. I woke up refreshed and ready to repeat making memories. I feel I'm the most blessed granny on earth. My family wants to spend time with me. It doesn't get much better than that!

Stay safe.Angie's frugal Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501238383146880477noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809691927256994512.post-20240621237974533612016-06-15T06:47:00.002-07:002016-06-15T06:47:47.092-07:00Cleaning the KitchenI attended junior high and high school in the 1960s. Along with core subjects in high school we could choose an elective or two. One of my electives was Home Economics for all four years. I always had a passion for the home front and all that was included to create a sanctuary.

Since that time - in America - HE has been renamed and revamped a few times. I believe it's now referred to as Life Styles or something as generic as that. No longer is it taught to clean or cook. I think there may still be a unit on baking cookies, but that's it in the cooking department. If I'm incorrect in that thought, please feel free to speak up in the comment section.

With this information in mind I was thinking I post what I have cleaned, but not how or when. So I'd like to begin in the kitchen to give my readers a schedule and what I use to clean.

DAILY
Wash, dry, and put away dishes (Mrs. Myers or Dawn dish soap)
Wash down counters after use (Soapy water and cloth)
Wash down stove top ( Clean cloth)
Spray sinks with home made orange cleaner and wash them
Dry all wet surfaces
Swiffer the floor
Wipe oven floor when used Cloth with soapy water wrung out)
(70s and 80s) Not as much rain as in the past week.

It's 5:25 AM and I hear the birds have just woken up with songs in their hearts. The sun is slowly rising, but there are strange looking clouds in the sky. Maybe rain on the horizon.

The garden strawberries have slowed down, but there's plenty of flowers and green berries coming out. I may have had my fill of chomping them down as soon as I pick them so maybe now I can add to the half quart I put in the freezer to make jam.

The blackberries are showing their buds with some of the berries on the verge of turning from red to black. I did buy some cheese cloth to cover them, but it's not enough. Perhaps today I will purchase more so I get the berries before the birds do.
To help motivate me this year I purchased the new Ball Canning Blue Book. There's a couple hundred recipes in it and they are covering all types of preserving this year. I'm most interested in the preserving with salt as I have never done this type of preserving.

I have a pot of pickling cucumbers and needed to thin them out. I transplanted two of them and thinned out five small ones. I hate to discard the small ones, but I may have to if no one wants them. One of the plants went into the garden that I had covered in the rubber mulch and the other went into a pot of it's own on the garden table.
One of my favorite meals I made this week is mushroom soup and green beans on the side. When it's warm out I eat light meals because I tend to get a sick stomach if a meal is heavy. Lunches and dinners included cold items such as tomatoes, lettuce and cheeses.
The carrots and celery that were brought home this week from the grocery got washed in a vinegar water solution, dried, and put in the refrigerator. One of my favorite snacks is celery with peanut butter and raisins.

I saved 5.25 using ibotta this week for a total of 47.25. It's adding up. I won't use ibotta every week, just when there are items I already use. I'm hoping for at least a hundred dollars by the time Christmas gets here so I can turn in the proceeds for four 25.00 Wal Mart or amazon gift cards.

The big cleaning I did this week is to dust all of the walls, crown molding, ceiling light fixtures, and base boards.

I had to leave the house twice this week going to the pharmacy and grocery one day and for the life of me I can't remember what else I did, but I remember I did it with my daughter S.

That was the week at this home. What was your week like? I hope all went well and your health is good. Please feel free to highlight your week in the comment section.
I have not tried this recipe recently, but I did make it a few times when the kids were little.

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon maple extract

Place sugar and water in a saucepan and heat on low until the sugar melts Remove from heat and add maple extract. Refrigerate

Sports Drink that begins with a G
6 tablespoons coconut oil
4 tablespoons corn starch
Any essential oil
Empty deodorant container
Mix coconut oil and corn starch in a bowl until well blended.(I used a spoon) Add essential oil of your choice. Spoon into an empty container and let sit. This will solidify. I use this every day.

No aluminum or other foreign ingredients. This may not provide odor protection for those who do heavy work all day.
Then I did a load of clothes and the washer broke. I had to get a new one. There was a time when Bob was alive that he would fix the problem and the machine would continue to serve our needs. Since I don't have those skills I went to find a new machine. I wanted something with no computer parts, but all machines now come with computer parts. I purchased the model with the least amount of bells and whistles as well as the one Consumer Reports listed as the best buy.

It so happens I ended up loving the washer. There is no wringer in the middle and my comforter fits nicely in the tub. A bonus is it sings to me when the load is complete. It plays an entire tune to let me know the job is done. I laughed out loud, but found the tune was catchy and happy sounding.

It was installed on Saturday. I washed the comforter and a load of whites as well as darks since then.

Tuesday the carpet man came and cleaned the bedroom wall to wall carpet and the living room area rug. I was amazed that the spot on the living room rug that Marley favored was totally removed.

Before the carpet man came I removed everything in the closet that resides on the floor and vacuumed the rugs in both rooms.

The hardwood floors were swiffered and all of the interior doors were cleaned.

The entire downstairs was dusted. I like this idea that I saw on a video - to dust every room at one time.

A Shark vacuum was on sale plus I had a 20% coupon for a light model. (Not heavy to carry around.) It pulls apart to a small unit so I can easily vacuum the steps. I'll keep this upstairs because the regular size one is too heavy to cart up the stairs.

I went through ibotta before I went to Wal Mart grocery store and added 5.75 to my ibotta total. The total is now at 42.00. I only purchase what I normally use, passing by all the other offers. I bought sliced cheese, butter, Glad cling wrap, among other items that have slipped memory. I received two rebates on the butter because one was for California butter and one was for a name brand. The name brand was made in California so they gave me both rebates on the same item.

Strawberries were picked and consumed this week. Every one of them. The total was half a quart!

Since the blackberry bushes are growing wildly, I trimmed the large branches that have no fruit or flowers on them.

Went to the bank to pay off the washer and found I had enough points on my credit card to purchase three more 25.00 gift cards. These along with ibotta funds, change, and 100.00 a month will go towards gifts for birthdays and holidays.

After the bank visit I stopped in Marshall's and found a pair of house slippers and a pad of paper to jot down accomplishments to write on the blog.
