The Martha Stewart Living Daily Giveaway

The Martha Stewart Living Daily Giveaway

Grocery Shopping 101

Grocery stores are masters at merchandising.  There are nice smells when you  enter that are piped to the front of the store from the bakery.  Lots of 'sales' stocked up at end cap locations.  (the shelves that get our attention at each end of an aisle)  Here's the secrets.  old time frugalistas know these, but frugalistas in training need to be informed.

1) Eat before you go to the store.  The bakery smells won't effect you when you're full.  If this isn't possible, have a few snacks in the car so you will not be tempted by the smell of fresh bread baking.

2) If at all possible, go alone.  Bringing family will cost you an extra 10% -20%.  I'm not talking about just the kids here!

3)  Have a list and coupons ready.  Stick to the list, unless there is an unadvertised sale on stock up items.  If your kids like a certain cereal and you know you have to buy it every week, stock up when it's on sale.  I use to hide the stock so the kids didn't over eat because their little eyes saw loads of an item.  Can you imagine what 5 boxes of their favorite cereal looks like to them?

4) Shop the perimeter of the store first.  Fruits and veggies, dairy, and other essentials are stocked around the outside of the aisles.

5) Become familiar with your store.  The less time spent in it, the less money is spent.

6)  Look on the bottom shelves and top shelves for lower prices.  The only areas the bottom shelves have higher prices is where items children are interested in are.  Like the cereal aisle has the larger boxes on the bottom shelf.  More money for the store.

7)  I have begun shopping every 2 weeks, with a goal of going once a month.  I buy milk and fresh veggies when we need them.  Here's where I can balance the cost of my time with the cost of food.  If you are a working mom, the savings are in both areas - time and money.

8) Warehouse stores have some good deals, but make sure it is really a deal.  I can get shampoo for free or close to free at a drug store that has rewards with 10 minutes of planning.  I noticed flour and basic supplies are priced well at my warehouse store and they accept coupons.

9) If the price of an item goes up drastically it is because the company thinks they can get that much.  It's a good seller.  I have been known to boycott products when I feel the company or store is getting too outrageous in pricing.  Six months later the items are 'on sale' for a year.  This tells me there are other women who are boycotting too.  It may be just me, but I don't like the feeling of being held hostage to any item or company.  I'm flexible and will find an alternative or go without.

10)  Use alternatives to sandwich meats.  Egg salad, tuna, ham salad, chicken, pb and j all make good alternatives.  Sandwich meat has lots of additives and is extremely expensive.

11)  Check the food supply at home before you go to the store, at least once a month.  Waste is high in this country and can cost hundreds of dollars every year for a family.

12)  This should have been first on the list.  Create a budget and stick to it.  After a few weeks you will be able to stay in budget.  Use a calculator in the store to check your total.

13)  I don't want to forget to mention end caps.  Most shoppers have been conditioned to think items placed on end caps are on sale.  This is not true, so check carefully before you put it in your cart.

Our budget is done on a monthly basis because I spend more one week than the other three weeks.  Any money I have left over gets put into savings, not brought into the next month.  You can put any money saved on anything that serves your family needs, like paying down debt.  It's the shopper's choice.

Let us know what your secrets are by posting a comment below.  Other shoppers will be happy to learn from you.

Real Deals From the Women in Red

WIR ladies please share your Steal Deals right here.  I'm excited you have chosen to get on board to create a society of young frugalistas.  Thank you.

Where I get my Christmas Cash

My gift budget is made up of small 'donations' taken from even smaller areas.  Here's how I pay for gifts.

1)  My state has deposits on bottles and cans.  Although I personally don't drink sodas, I look for them on the ground where ever I go.  My son also donates his cans to me.  I didn't keep a record last year, but a mental note reveals this method contributed about 72.00 to my budget.

2) All of my change went into the budget.  This method contributed 195.00.

3) Rebates.  I usually go only for full rebates on a product.  This contributed to the bulk of the budget.  I didn't add them up last year, but I am determined to keep track of them this coming year as a way to encourage all of you to see the savings.

4)  Ebates, close to 20.00.  I started this in September.  This year I will use ebates all year.

5)  Swagbucks.  I haven't been obsessive about using swagbucks, but I will this year.  I made 35.00 in gift cards here.

6) Credit card points.  I always pay off the card at the end of the month so the points don't cost me anything.  I used 60 points on gift cards that bought 75.00.  Then I got another 50.00 restaurant GC from another card.  This coming year I'm going to see if I'm brave enough to use a card to pay my utilities to earn even more points for next year.  Not auto deduction, though.  I like control over what I'm responsible for, so I won't do auto anything, no matter what they offer me.

7) I also gave 3 magazine subscriptions through the coke rewards program. (ends in January)

Without the rebates factored in I saved 447.00 using the above methods.  I can't wait to see what the total will be with the rebates factored in in 2011.

To top it all off, I'm not as good at this as some other ladies I know.  Last year there was a lady who donated over 800.00 in groceries to a local women's shelter, all bought for free or under 1.00.  Now that's what I call powerful!

I hope you consider jumping on board with this challenge.  Let me know how you do.  Leave a comment under any post, I'll be able to pick it up.  We can share our triumphs and encourage each other to' get to getting'!

Begin the Saving Process for Next Year

I'm a bit 'spent out' and will take a rest from all of the after Christmas sales for a while.  There appears to be some good sales out there, but next month there will be better sales.  I'm waiting for the Land's End free shipping and drastic reduction sale they normally have in mid January.

This is where I'd like to talk about the after Christmas sales.  Retailers have an inventory that needs to be reduced to make way for the spring and summer lines.  This can be a good thing for us.  It can also be a trap.  It's the traps that we have to watch out for.  I have seen retailers take advantage of after Christmas shoppers by raising prices then having a '50% off sale' that draws in hoards of shoppers.  It takes time to recognize the traps, but if you are serious about the frugal lifestyle a sixth sense begins to develop.

I won't shop much right now, but I will keep looking.  This is a form of research for me.    I also know that around mid January retailers are itching to sell winter merchandise to make room for the new pastels of spring.  That's when I research in earnest and begin my shopping for next year.  By then I also have organized the gift budget.

To begin your adventure remember that retailers want you to charge in after Christmas and spend, the same way you did before Christmas.  Take a mental step back and relax thinking about what YOU want to do.  This is a good time to begin a cash only gift giving budget.  Begin stashing a buck here and there or five dollars at the end of the week or quarters and dimes.  It doesn't matter what you choose to do.  The end result will be you have more cash put away than what you started with.  Look at it this way:

1.00  week / 52.00

5.00 week / 260.00

10.00 week / 520.00

Chances are the small amount you put away won't be missed.  And the stress around the holidays won't be missed either because you have cash.  Cash combined with purchase know how will make your dollars worth more even when everyone is saying the dollar is worth less.

Good luck on your adventure.  I know you can do it and be thrilled with the results.

Merry Christmas

My family will be arriving tonight to celebrate the Christmas season with me.  It will be such a special treat for me- the gift of the season.  I briefly mentioned that I lost my husband this summer and my children lost their father.  He left this earth and now watches over us.  His passing was relatively sudden, but we did have 32 days to say we loved him.  I had 40 years with a man who was all about his family.  Whenever his name is mentioned by anyone who knew him the words that always followed were, " He's such a good guy."  Oh yes he is.  I know he will be here.  It won't be the same as in the past, when we could see him and touch him, but I know he will be sitting around the table laughing with us.  He didn't laugh often, but when he did it was infectious.

We all know Christmas is the celebration of the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.  We say it and we believe it.  This year I have been gifted with a knowledge beyond this fact.  Something else we hear all the time,  that Jesus Christ loves and protects us.  This year is different because for the first time in my life I can actually feel that love and protection.  It's in my very soul.  He can be nothing less than pure love because He is the God of all good creation.  It is impossible for Him to be anything else but love, kindness and truth.  He is these things and more, every day of the year.

He cares about every detail of each of our lives.  So when you are saying your prayers today, tell Him you love Him and thank Him for what you do have.  He would be very excited to hear from you.  He would consider the conversation a birthday gift and return the gift with many blessings.

Through the Returning King I wish you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas season and a fruitful New Year.

This is so simple you may never buy cocktail sauce pre made again.

2 T horseradish

Mix together.  Taste to see if you want it hotter!  Sometimes I add a dash of lemon juice just to mix it up a bit.  Great with cold shrimp.

Military

I'd like to say how thankful my friends, family and I are for the men and women who are selflessly serving in the military this special time of the year.  Our prayers go out to you.  Thank you and Merry Christmas to all.

Are Women The Strength of A Nation?

Schedules and errands.  Work and dropping the kids at daycare.  Dinner and laundry.  Falling into bed after a quick shower.  The task  list for a woman is endless.

My husband's grandmother would often say a man's work is 9 to 5, but a woman's work is never done.  I didn't quite get it then, but I figured it out a couple years later.  Women are care givers and nurturers by nature.  You only have to look at a mama cat who has kittens or a dog with a brood of puppies.  The offspring are nurtured to grow strong and healthy by the mother.  It's mom who also teaches manners and limits.

Of course human nurturing takes quite a bit longer, but the concept is the same.

Women are an extremely important piece of the big picture.  Being a woman can seem to be a thankless job and a tiresome one at times, but the power we hold to mold a nation is beyond the power of any government.

Let me explain.  Any nation is made up of small family units.  Alone the unit has little power.  Banned together, kind of like a union, the power of families is insurmountable.  Every time a child is fed well or helped with homework, disciplined with love,  or any of the small tasks that are completed each day, the power of the nation grows stronger.  Every time we console someone with an open heart that act of kindness builds strength in the unseen foundation.  Combine all of the acts of kindness and strength in a day and the foundation of a nation grows stronger with each passing moment.

For me the most important thing I do is start my day with a quick prayer.  I hand over all of the mistakes I know I'll make and ask for peace in the hearts of mankind.  I offer everything I do as prayer for someone who needs it.  Then I move forward.  I wash dishes and do laundry.  I do my blog and grocery shop.  I do all of the tasks any other woman does.  Sometimes I get angry or sad.  Sometimes I say the wrong thing to someone.   These things are looked at as negative.  But if even these mistakes are offered as prayer, we learn from them and someone somewhere benefits from them.

If we raise our families with love in our hearts, the outcome will be well worth it.  When we put our families above ourselves, the return on the investment can't be measured.  They will always love us despite our mistakes and learn to be strong, yet loving and kind adults.  These are the components of a strong nation.  These are the things we are called to do.

I would be interested in hearing what you think  benefits your family and others.  Leave a comment in the section below.
